TATA cars

The Tata Sumo is one of the most successful cars made by the leading Indian car manufacturing company Tata Motors. This particular model was so successful that many variants of it have been made of it to cater to different market segments. Tata is known for producing commercial and heavy vehicles for the commercial market and this has been the cause of the company’s fame. But the group had its eyes set on entering the passenger vehicle market for quite some time. With the Tata Sumo experiment receiving overwhelming response in the passenger vehicle market they were further encouraged to continue producing passenger vehicles.

At the time when the Sumo was released into the Indian market there were not many cars like it. Generally the passenger vehicles available in India were of basic utility but the Sumo offered far more luxury to the average passenger. This made the car stand out from others on the road. Similar cars were being imported into the city and the Sumo managed to stand shoulder to shoulder in competition with the foreign manufacturers and span over a fraction of the market. This was supported with the fact that the road networks in India began to be developed and people started to wander on to new routes for which the Tata Sumo was best suited.

The Sumo was targeted at large families who needed a spacious and comfortable ride for everyday commuting. It is no secret that India has a trend of having big families but coupled with the economic progress many of these families could now afford a car like Sumo. Not only does the car give them ample space and luxury but it is also a symbol of class for the owner. By no means was the Tata Sumo restricted to this market segment as the corporate sector, especially the IT establishments took on the Sumo. The car offered them the kind of space which would allow them to transport a large number of employees in on go.

Over time the Tata Sumo became one of the most popular cars in the Indian market with the car actually assuming a cult status. But naturally the Indian market got flooded with competitors of the Sumo which posed a challenge to the car. Nonetheless despite all the competition the Sumo remains amongst the most popular utility vehicles in India. We have seen Tata Motors further capitalize on the popularity of the Sumo by making different versions of the car that were catered to a specific segment of the market.
